American artist Adam Lister uses watercolors to paint recreations of famous paintings and portraits of pop culture icons made to looks as though they’ve been rendered in 8-bit color graphics like you’d see when playing old Nintendo and Atari video games. It’s an awesome combination of gaming nostalgia, art history and pop culture appreciation. It’s fun to take in Lister’s dramatic restyling and identify such iconic subjects as the farmer and his daughter in Grant Wood’s American Gothic, van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Munch’s The Scream, the terrifying twins from The Shining, and Walter White from Breaking Bad.
“These pictures are like puzzles, carefully taken apart and then pieced back together to reveal the subject,” List said to Business Insider. “These works were inspired by my love for geometric abstraction, the history of visual art, and old school digital graphics.”
